Poetry: Edmodo-style

Mrs. Coker's senior English classes are using social media in a new way these days: to broadcast poetry, ethically, accurately, and creatively with the help of of one RRISD's newest programs: Edmodo. Designed to look similar to Facebook, Edmodo has the appears of a social media network, but with an educator's mindset. With Edmodo, students can join their classes, create a digital library (like a drop box), respond to their teachers, view assignments and grades, and receive badges. Unlike Moodle, parents have their own logins to see their student's work as well.

With this in mind, Mrs. Coker has set up "groups" for her senior English students to join. When she creates assignments, she posts them on Edmodo and allows her students to respond. She can immediately give them feedback and praise. Plus, students are immediate published authors for the public to see (if they choose). Her writers now how the power of authorship and, they are learning how social networks can be used for more than just chatting with friends. In this case, they can be used to share ideas, spread thoughts, and create assignments. Check out the beginning of their Edmodo experience!
